PERFORMING
ROCK, POP & JAZZ

My time in South Africa 1989 - 1992

During my time in South Africa I lived and worked in Johannesburg as a freelance pianist, keyboarder and musical director.

During Apartheid the cultural scene was strictly separated by race and black, colored and white musicians rarely performed together on the same stage.

During my time in Johannesburg this slowly started to change, leading to a fusion between Afrikaans, traditional black music, Afro pop, rap and jazz. Entertainment in the form of open-air concerts, jazz performances in pubs, musical dinner shows and musical shows in casinos was booming. This time was a high light in my musical performing career in which I was able to make cultural and musical contacts across the different styles of music and musicians from different cultural backgrounds.

During this time I was a keyboardist in the Afro Pop band Marc&Alex, playing with musicians like Vusi Khumalo (dr.) Thandi Klaassen (voc.), Tsidii Leloka (voc.) Mara Louw (voc.), Natalia da Rocha (voc.) , Kurt Egelhof (voc.), Jimmy Dludlu (guit.), Victor Masondo (bass), Joe Day (voc.) and many others.
